Shawshank Redemption was an incredible movie. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it! I think that the film director got the viewer’s attention right off the bat when the first scene was Andy Dufresne sitting in the car drinking with a gun in his lap. Then, it pans over to a court house with Andy on the stand being questioned for killing his wife and her lover. For me personally, I was instantly drawn in because I love crime movies. Andy was sentenced to two life sentences for killing the wife and lover. When we first meet Red he is trying to be released from prison because he had served 20 years out of his life sentence. Red is the man in prison that “can get things.” When Andy arrives to the prison there are inmates in the field that are making bets on who was going to cry first that night. Red had his bet that it was going to be Andy. However, Andy didn’t make a sound that first night in jail. It took Andy a while to say anything to the people in prison, but when he did he first spoke with Red and asked if Red could get him a rock hammer. Red said that he liked Andy from the start. Andy used his rock hammer to create little objects and he used to carve things on his wall. Eventually Andy starts working for the prison and is in charge of all the financial responsibilities. Andy soon realizes that the prison is taking part in unethical finances. Andy stays for years and finally he carved a tunnel out of the prison. When he finally escaped he took the financial book with him and became a millionaire and skipped off to Mexico. My mind was blown that Andy was able to pull this stunt off. I didn’t even see it coming! When the officers came and said “oh my god” I thought that Andy had committed suicide. I can’t believe that Andy got away with escaping and was able to cash in so much money. It made me so happy though when Red was finally released and he found the money and letter in the rock wall to meet Andy in Mexico. I really loved this movie and I would definitely watch it again!

Unlike many of the other recent movies we watched, I could honestly say that I actually liked this movie a lot. For some odd reason I was immediately pulled into the character Andy, and I felt as if he was a truly reliable source. Although he was sentenced to two life sentences in Shawshank prison for murdering his wife, I still believed that he was telling the truth about having no part in that crime. I was glad that Andy made friends with Red at the prison , who is also serving a life sentence, and how their relationship grew. It was kind of obvious that Andy was going to escape from the prison because I believed he was just too smart to be stuck there. One thing I wasn’t very fond of was the corruption and unethical behaviors of the guards at the Prison. I believe Hadley and Norton were two of the most corrupted people in Shawshank and they were the ones who should’ve been with the inmates. All they wanted to do was exploit people while they made a quick profit and I find that highly unethical. Just because you’re in a job position that represents the government, that gives you no special power to abuse anyone else’s right or act any differently from a normal job. I wasn’t surprised that eventually Andy told local news reporters about the corruption going down in the prison and how that led authorities to go seeking for Hadley and Norton. I’m glad they caught Hadley, but I would’ve never imagined that Norton would commit suicide to avoid punishment. It’s quite ironic how Norton committed suicide to escape punishment, and by doing so he committed the ultimate punishment. I felt like the ending was somewhat cliche by having such a happy ending, but I feel like no one is going to complain about true friendship reunited at the end. I’m glad Red violated his parole and finally trusted Andy, and because of this led to him seeing his friend once again. After many years of pain and misery, the two finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel and can finally live a life free.

In the film “Shawshank Redemption”, Andy, one of the main characters, gets sent to the brutal Shawshank Prison because he was accused of murdering his wife who was a golf pro. At first the film started out kind of slow and hard to become interested in, but by the middle of the film it was more intriguing. Andy meets Red, and soon finds out that Red is the guy to go to if you ever needed anything outside the Shawshank Prison. After associating with Red for quite some time, Andy asks him if he will get him a hammer so he can “collect and sculpt rocks”. Although Red knows that Andy plans on using it for his escape. Time passes, and Andy frequently gets raped and beaten by the “Sisters” within the prison. He then begins to work on tarring the roof rather than working in the laundry room, and helps one of the prison guards with his taxes. Andy then gets attacked by the sisters again, and ends up being put in the infirmary where then his friends beat the leader of the Sisters making him paralyzed. Andy begins to be more in charge of the finances within the prison, finally carving a tunnel to escape from prison. After years, he escapes and ends up going to Mexico where he then obtains wealth by using Warden Norton’s money and his identity. At the prison, Hadley gets arrested for murder, and Warden Norton opens up his safe to mind his Bible rather than his book. The police come pounding on his door, so he then decides to shoot himself. Red and Andy then reunite in Mexico on a beach on the Pacific Coast. The film was very interesting, and it reminded me of “I love you Phillip Morris” with how smart the two main characters were when they would escape prison.

“Shawshank Redemption” is an extremely popular movie. Many people have seen it and even more know of it. For me, I am one of those who only knew of it. This is my first time watching the movie and I honestly can say I enjoyed it. I do not like many films. It is hard for me to find a movie that I enjoy because I do not like to take the time to watch any. And when I do watch one, it is either assigned to me or forced upon me by my friends.
I thought this movie was good for many reasons. The first obvious one is Morgan Freeman. I do not know one single person who does not enjoy any work by Morgan Freeman. I especially liked his role of “Red” in this film because it is the opposite of his standard role of God/good samaritan. Plus his narration was fantastic. Even though he was a criminal, he was trustworthy, and that is really important.
The second thing I liked about this film was the smirk-i-ness it held throughout. The whole time, I personally knew that Andy would escape. I knew it would be through a tunnel. Many people have told me about the film. But I still found myself with a smirk on my face whenever Andy did something questionable. I asked “what are you up to Andy” more than once.
The third part I loved about this movie was the brilliance and planning of Andy. At the end when it was all put together, I sat back and smiled in my chair. The disposal of rock through his pant leg and the entire tax scam that ended up being the final piece in his escape. It was a brilliantly thought out plan.
Finally, the fourth reason I loved this movie was the look on the warden’s face when he threw the polished rock ornament through the poster. It was a face of utter confusion and self-realization of defeat. It immediately made up for everything terrible he had done. It was the official satisfaction of the viewer in my mind. Everything else was icing on the cake.

The Shawshank Redemption was a very good movie. I found it very interesting and heartbreaking at some points. Andy seems to be a very intelligent, well-rounded individual who really finds his way in the prison. He figures out how to make himself important and have others need him so that he gets what he needs as well. I feel as though the library he helped put together was at first to keep him busy but then he realized he could grow and help many others achieve what they never thought they could, an education. His whole character is based on intelligence, so therefor education. He uses his whit in every way possible to better his survival and experience in that prison and even becomes best friends with the one guy who can get him anything he needs. Later one he makes the all the guards, and eventually the warden rely on his greatly. The warden relies on him so much that when he figured out someone knows what really happened to Andy’s wife, he has that person killed so that Andy can continue to work on his money for him. The warden gets what he deserves in the end, but Andy was there for way too much time than he should have been. An innocent man put into jail, that’s just sick. I’m not sure if prison guards actually beat the inmates till death like the fat one at the beginning of the movie but if they do, I don’t see how that isn’t murder. He may be a felon, well actually he could not be, but either way that is no excuse to just beat him till he dies and somehow get away with it as if you’re the man. That is inhuman. Sometimes people do need to know their place, but that is not the way to do it. But overall, this movie was fantastic and the acting was phenomenal. Morgan Freeman couldn’t have been better for the role and the narration. It was funny how he narrated even thought he movie was suppose to be about Andy, but that just gave us all the outside views of him and keeps him mysterious and interesting.

  6. Devon Flack says:

At first, I was not looking forward to watching the film “The Shawshank Redemption.” In my opinion the trailer made the movie look really boring and made it seem like the audience was for men. After watching the movie, I decided that I actually like it. The movie was very powerful and I emotionally connected to the characters in the film. At first I did not like Andy’s character because I believed that he had murdered his wife and her lover. After watching his character grows in Shawshank prison I re-thought that maybe he was innocent after all. One thing that was really disturbing to me throughout the entire movie was the constant murder that took place within the prison. I was really annoyed that the guards and some inmates kept getting away with killing other inmates and were not punished for their acts until the end of the film. It made me question our own prison system, making me wonder if this was a true story and if people are actually treated this way in prison. I really liked Red’s character in the film. In my opinion he was the father character and friend. He was sort of like a peacemaker within the prison. He was the one who kept looking out for Andy and made sure that Andy had a friend. In the end of the film, he even learns from Andy’s actions, by learning to survive outside of prison and become a better person. I really liked how the story was told through Red’s point of view. I thought it would be told from Andy’s point of view because he was the character that the film focused on. By giving the audience Red’s point of view it fully helped connect outsider’s opinions on other inmates in the cell. I was able to see Andy through different eyes. It added more depth and meaning to the synopsis.

  7. NiGEL Clark says:

In the movie Shawshank Redemption the director is known for his panning up. Meaning he takes shots from the sky and establishes the shot to depict a better scene. I truly liked the movie because Morgan Freeman is the narrator and he always seems to impress me. He has been in prison for a very long time for murder. Andy Dufresne is also a great actor. He got framed and his wife cheated on him. His wife cheated on him and he thought about killing the man she cheated with. Instead his wife got killed by a murder and now he is framed. I loved the scene where they actually become friends because this depicts two great actors coming together. The director is amazing because he is the director of the first season of the walking dead. This new series depicts very difficult camera angles and very in depth details of each character. He does this in this movie and adds an even better plot. The fact that he got framed made me very upset and made me question the judicial system today. I was also very upset when his wife cheated on him. This makes this movie very personal to me and makes me relate with the characters in the movie. This allowed me to want to keep watching and not want to leave my computer. Overall the plot was on point along with the actors in the film. Morgan Freeman has not made a bad film yet and Frank Darabont does a wonderful job with his precise camera angles. This 1994 film took us back into the 1940’s and allowed us to see what the prisons were like back then. Usually when we think of the 1940’s we think of world war 2 not the American prisons. Overall great movie.

  8. Emily Czelusniak says:

I really enjoyed the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”. I had previously seen the movie so I knew that when I watched it again I would enjoy it. The main characters in the movie were Andy and Red. They were both prisoners in the Shawshank Prison. Andy was there because he was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He got a life sentence even though we find out later that he did not truly commit the crime. Red is in the prison for murder, but they never tell us who, or how he murdered the person, but they do inform us that he regrets his actions and feels remorse. When Andy first gets to the prison he does not fit in and bullied by some of the other inmates. After being in for about 6 years he befriends Red and they stay close the entire time they are there.
I think that Andy was an inspirational character. He made the best out of a bad situation. He knew that he didn’t murder his wife, but yet he took the punishment with grace. He eventually started to do the taxes of the guards and the warden. He improved the prison’s library until it was the best in New England and he tutored inmates so they could get their GED. He even laundered money for the warden.
I found the warden to be despicable. He didn’t care about the inmates and their well being and turned a blind eye when the guards physically harmed the inmates for no reason. He also took dirty money and bribes. I think the worst part is that when Andy had an opportunity to get a new trail due to another inmates information on they man who really murdered his wife, the warden doesn’t consider it and murders the other inmate so he won’t talk and makes it look like he was trying to escape.

Even though this is a rather old movie I truly enjoyed watching it. I preferred this to any of the other movies we have watched so far this year because it kept me interested throughout the movie. The protagonist does seem to be innocent though but then again the majority of criminals are masters at lying and it is so hard to know whether they are telling the truth or not. I liked the main character a lot because I thought his acting was good and also he seemed very different from any of the other criminals, in the way that he was educated. I was surprised to see how rough the guards were towards the criminals and the fact that they could get away with pretty much anything. It was especially touchy when the overweight man was hit so hard against his head by one of the guards that he died the next day from internal bleeding and no punishment was given to him. The life on the inside of the prison is rough and the prisoners are treated with less than respect by not only the guards but also by the other prisoners. I guess it does make sense that these men do not deserve much respect since they have committed serious crimes such as murder and therefore need to be punished but I think some things like food and drinks should be improved considering the prisoners are still human. Furthermore, it would not look good on the warden if prisoners were falling sick and it would only cause him trouble and money to treat the ill prisoners. I think it was sad when Brooks was finally released after fifty years behind bars and his first reaction was sadness. He had gotten so used to spending time in prison that he did not know or want to be on the outside again.

  11. Aaron Sobel says:

Shawshank Redemption is another adaptation of a Stephen King book. I have previously seen this movie, and it is one of my favorite films. The movie is narrated by the voice of God aka Morgan Freeman. He narrates the life of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is convicted for the murder of both his wife and her lover. The narration done by Morgan Freeman is excellent, and it creates a story book feel. A story book with no happiness. Morgan Freeman’s character Red befriends Andy, and helps Andy get stuff from the outside. Andy is assaulted by a gang, and is forced to commit another murder to save his life. He is then forced to take care of the prison’s taxes since of his former profession as a banker. The warden then has Andy launder money for him. When another inmate, Tommy, arrives at the prison, Andy befriends him, and helps him get his GED. Tommy uncovers the true possible murderer of Andy’s wife and lover. Andy confronts the warden about it, but to conserve his interests the warden has Tommy murdered, and sends Andy to solitary confident. Andy then executes a daring escape, by tunneling a hole through his cell wall with the hammer that Red procured for him. The whole is covered by a poster of a beautiful women. Andy escapes to Mexico where he is later met by Red who was released from jail. The Shawshank Redemption is details how a person maintains their self worth when placed into an utter hopeless situation. Andy had no chance of beating the court system at first, the gang at first, or the warden. He persevered, and used his cunning to outsmart his adversity with some help from the right people. The film is excellent all around from the cinematography, the acting, and of course the story is timeless.

  12. Guy Yelencsics says:

I really enjoyed the opening sequence of Shawshank Redemption. I think it painted the picture perfectly of whether or not to think if he was really innocent or not. I really didn’t know what to think. But then again if he wasn’t innocent then there really wouldn’t be a storyline for the movie…
How the introduced Morgan Freeman’s character was a great scene. It shows from the beginning to me how important of a character he would turn out to be. How the prisoners greeted the new current inmates coming into the prison for the first time sets the tone of how life in Shawshank was. Also how nicely dressed all the new inmates were gave me the impression that they had been loaded up on the bus right out of the courtroom after their sentencing.
The way in which the warden came and spoke to the new prisoners made it out be like the place was more than just a prison. The brutality of the guards was also awful to witness. The way in which the head of guards beat up the new inmate just for crying and yelling set the tone for the rest of the movie. Made me really wonder if most prisons are like this.
I really like how Red, Morgan Freeman, was the narrator. To me it was like he was telling this as if it had already happened like he was telling the story of Andy. At first it seemed like he didn’t like Andy.
As soon as Andy walked into the mess hall when the guy looked at him it foreshadowed how his character would assault Andy later in the movie. It took me a while to realize that they were the same guy. So he picked out Andy right as soon as he saw him.

  13. justin ackerman says:

I found the Shawshank Redemption to be a very interesting and intriguing movie. The main character, Andy, is convicted of a double murder and sent to Shawshank State Prison in Maine. When Andy arrives at the prison, he feels very out of place. He is continually harassed by the other inmates and guards. There, Andy meets Red, who becomes his connection for retrieving anything outside of the prison. He uses his intelligence to get what he needs. The Warden and the guards both begin to rely on him for their financial stability. Later in the movie, it is shown that Andy truly was innocent and did not commit the crime he was convicted of. There was one person who truly knew what happened to Andy’s wife, however, the Warden has that person executed, because he needs Andy to keep an eye on his investments. The Shawshank Redemption really did a great job at showing the inhumane ways of American prison. The guards sometimes beat inmates to death, and put innocent men like Andy behind bars all the time. I though Morgan Freedman was perfect for the narration and other main character. By telling the story from Red’s point of view as opposed to Andy’s point of view, one can connect the opinions on other inmates and the prison itself. I found the Warden to be an especially nasty character. He was extremely corrupt and deserved being put into custody at the end of the movie. I really liked the ending as well. Red keeps his promise that he made to Andy, and escapes to Mexico, and finds Andy on the beach. Red finally admits he feels hope in the end. Andy was definitely an inspirational character, and in the end he made Shawshank Prison a much better place than it was. The inmates have more dignity and respect, and the corrupt Warden is taken out.

  14. Brian Lyn says:

I’ve never declared a movie as my favorite. This is my favorite movie. It’s emotionally touching and brilliantly made. It caught my attention in the beginning and kept it the entirety of its duration. It defiantly makes you think about the wrongly accused and prison life. The choice of narrator was perfect. Why? It most stories the narrator is the main character or protagonist. They are reflecting back onto their lives and talking about their regrets. When the narrator reflects back to his life, he typically isn’t killed. However in this movie the narrator could reflect on the main protagonist’s life, and we honestly could fear for his life. I normally don’t freak out during movie scenes when the protagonist is being held captive or his friend is at risk of being killed. When I watched this though… I was going crazy. I was physically cheering for the characters, and yelling at the warden and others. The ending was so satisfying, despite how skeptical I was of it successfully ending like that. The twist that happened throughout the entire movie… I can’t even explain in words how awesome that was. “Salvation comes from within.” Literally his salvation was the rock hammer which was within the Bible. I had thought he had killed himself. The suspense built up to escape was too much. I grew several gray hairs expecting them to show him dead. Hope is indeed a powerful thing. It can cause a person to risk their life, but it never disappoints a person. You can always hope, whether or not you are hoping for something real may or may not be true. It can take a person through the hardest trials and successfully bring them through. It can change a person and their will to fight for something, and their influence on people.

  15. Ryan Lee says:

Shawshank Redemption is a movie I’ve been wanting to see for a while but never got the chance to. So many people talk about it and now I know why. I thought it was a really great movie and rightfully deserves to be considered one of the classics. The only thing is that I kind of knew Andy would use the rock hammer to try to escape once Red asked him if he was going to. I thought the foreshadowing was really obvious there. But other than that, I thought the movie was interesting and full of really heartbreaking moments for Andy and the viewer. I think the problem is that he always had hope and even told the other prisoners how important hope was. Red did not really like that, which reminded me of how in The Dark Knight, the prisoners say how hope is the worst thing they can have. So when Andy finally catches a break with Tommy as a possible witness, everything seems to be going well. It really angered me, however, when the warden had him shot by Hadley, as did all the other scenes when Hadley beat up prisoners (especially with the new inmate that died because the doctor was not there). I thought that all of the crime going on inside of the prison – even involving the warden and the guards – was really interesting and made me think if anything like that happens nowadays. The whole movie reminded me of the TV series Prison Break. In that, the main character, Michael, is just like Andy. He finds people who can get things for him and befriends the warden, all with the ultimate plan to escape. This show and this movie both depict the crimes that happen on a daily basis within prisons, along with the prisoners’ struggle with hope.

  16. Kaylyn Lambertt says:

The movie “Shawshank Redemption” was probably one of my favorite movies that we’ve had to watch for class. At first I was a little skeptical about the movie, especially since I haven’t enjoyed many of the movies we have watched so but it turned out to be great. The movie is about Andy who was sent to Shawshank prison for allegedly killing his wife and the guy she was sleeping with. In the prison the guards treated all the inmates horribly. One part that I found extremely disturbing was in the beginning when the one inmate was crying so much that they took him out and beat him to death. To think that anyone could do that and feel nothing about doing it is horrible. At Shawshank Andy meets Red, who soon becomes his best friend while he stays in prison. Red is known by all the guys in the prison as the one who can get things from the outside, like for example cigarettes, which was pretty popular among the men. What I thought that was really interesting about the movie was how it was told from Red’s perspective. At first I thought it would kind of jump between the two characters hoping to know what Andy was thinking when everything was happening to him at Shawshank. But after watching the whole movie I really liked that they kept it in Red’s perspective because it kept you on your toes and by the end you were kind of surprised to see that this whole time Andy had been planning on escaping, something you would have known throughout the whole movie if it was told in Andy’s perspective. I also really liked how at the end when they were both out of prison Andy and Red still remained good friends. Overall I really enjoyed this movie and would definitely watch it again.

  17. Kyle Fanelli says:

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie “Shawshank Redemption”. There were many moments in the movie that gave me chills. The ending of the movie was awesome. The fact that they meet up in Mexico after Red goes finds the note under the rock in the small town that Andy proposed in was cool. Also, one of the scenes that had an affect of me was the scene where Brooks died. I thought it was sad that he did not know how to live outside of the prison walls. The only way of life that he knew was a life in prison because he was in prison for most of his life. It especially affected me when he wrote “Brooks was here” on the wood in the room he died in. Overall, there was not a lot of action in the movie but it did not matter. The story line was fantastic and the movie kept me interested and always kept me wanting to know what would happen next. “Shawshank Redemption” is known as being a great movie and this is partially because of the narration. The narration tactics do a great job providing essential information to the viewer that otherwise, without the use of a narrator, the viewer may end up getting lost. Not to mention Morgan Freeman is the best narrator with the coolest voice. The narration in the film is very helpful because the narrator is an actual character in the film. Therefore, the viewer is provided with extra knowledge, because the narrator would know more information if he is an actual character. Another interesting thing that the director does is that he changes the narrator of the scene where Brooks dies. The narrator is Brooks and he is used because its helps us know why he does what he does and how his life is after prison. All in all, “Shawshank Redemption” is great a great movie and the narrator does a great job in telling the story.

I really enjoyed watching the movie “Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont. I was instantly pulled in and hooked on the movie from the beginning. Andy is accused of the murder of his wife and her lover, however he claims to be an innocent man! Red, played by Morgan Freeman points out that Andy doesn’t belong in the terrifying Shawshank Prison.
Andy learns that Red is the man to go to if you ever need anything and an unlikely friendship arises. The acting was very real and sometimes very gruesome. For instance all of the violence and murder that took place in the prison. I was shocked by the amount of torture that went down in the prison from guards and fellow inmates.
This was one of my favorite movies we have watched so far this semester. The plot drew me in instantly. During the time Andy spent in prison I was waiting for a big surprise. He became trusted and in charge of the prisons finance, managing the books. However he was also laundering money and committing crimes fro the prison.
Andy asks Red to get him a rock hammer. With this he carved a tunnel out of prison and escaped to Mexico. Not only did he escape but he left a millionaire by stealing the financial book. When Andy did not come out of his cell for roll call I was expecting him to have committed suicide or simply rebelling. To my surprise and the climax of the movie, Andy was long gone!
“Shawshank Redemption” was a great movie that I will most definitely watch again and recommend to others. I loved everything about it, from the actors, the plot, and the instant connection you feel with it. I hope we watch more movies like this in the future.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of those movies that are very popular and I should have seen by now, yet just never got around to it. So, I was happy when I found out that we would be watching it. The movie did not disappoint, and I can understand why it is so popular.

Red, portrayed by Morgan Freeman, is the narrator. However, he is not the main character. That instead in Andy, played by Tim Robbins. Andy is sent to Shawshank after he is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, however it is unclear to the viewer whether or he did indeed murder them until later in the film. Once inside Andy acquires a rock hammer from Red, the prison smuggler. Red and Andy become friends. Andy then gets assigned to work in the library, so that he can help the warden and the guards do their taxes. The warden has Andy do some illegal bookkeeping so that he can launder millions of dollars through the books. Eventually, Andy gets fed up with the warden after he has this apprentice killed. Andy breaks out of prison after stealing the accounting books. There is the famous scene of Andy standing in the rain with his arms stretched out and his face towards the sky after breaking out. The warden kills himself, rather than getting arrested. Red, finally, gets released and joins Andy in Mexico.

I really liked how Red was the narrator instead of Andy because it left an element of surprise as to what Andy’s intentions were and where he went when he disappeared. I think the movie would have suffered if Andy was the narrator.

I did not like the ending though. This was originally a novel written by Stephen King, yet the ending felt too happy to have been written by Stephen King.

  20. Alejandro Battistel says:

The shawkshank redemption was one of the best and most fascinating movies ive ever seen. It really makes you think a lot, there were some things that I disagreed with though. Although the movie is great in every aspect, they portray the inmates too well, as if they were all friendly and nice to each other and to the protagonist. In real life the inmates wouldn’t be so friendly and nice, its just one thing that I thought wasn’t too accurate about this movie. Other than that I really liked the movie, I really belived that Andy was innocent, although he was sentenced to two life sentences in prison he really seemed as if he had no part in the crime. I kind saw it coming that andy would escape from the prison, it didn’t seem fair that he should be there in the first place. One thing that bothered me a lot was the behavior of the guards, they were really corrupt and aggressive, and highly unethical. The movie had a lot of things going on, Andy gets attacked and raped by the sisters in the prison and after one of those attacks gets sent to the infirmary. Andy asks Red if he can get him a hammer but doesn’t tell him his true plans on what he will do with the hammer, although red knows he is planning to escape the prison. Andy finally escapes the prison and flees to mexico where he uses Warden Nortons identity and gains all of his wealth. This was not my first time watching the shawshank redemption so I kind of knew what would happen when and where, all though I saw it a very long time ago so I couldn’t quite remember every aspect. Although I had seen it before I found myself really attached to the characters, especially red, and was very into the movie from start to finish.

This movie was one of the best movies I have seen in a while, it really grasps emotion and the reality that there are many things that go unnoticed. The character Andy portrayed a wrongly convicted banker that was not ready for prison. Over his first few weeks, the film really brought to light the many things that go on in prison and how newcomers like Andy are abused. Luckily, he made friends with Red that helps him out along the way and is the lead provider of goods. Although Red was in prison for an actual murder he committed, his personality was one of a good hearted man, with the intention of looking out for susceptible people like Andy. Given Andy’s banking profession, he wins favorability amongst the guards, and over time they trust him with bigger tasks, showing how his personality is really liked by most. Andy finally stands up for himself against the prison rape gang showing how anyone can get tired of being pushed around, and although he gets badly beaten, the usually brutal and overlooking guards punish the abuser as payback for hurting Andy. The prison grows on Andy, but he still holds a glimmer of hope, something that other inmates lack. Through his perseverance he improves the educational aspect of the prison, which makes the prison topic of conversation. The lead prison warden, whom I assumed was a decent, religious man, then shows his dark side at this point, and uses publicity to create a program to make him rich though cheap inmate labor. The man solicits the expertise of Andy which simply sickens me, as he hides under the mask of being the man of correcting criminals, when in reality he is no worse than the prisoners. Through schemes of murder and abusing his power, I realize that power and greed is can take over any man, and cause him to become a monster just like the people the warden looks over. I find relief that Andy uses evidence to make him guilty, as payback for using him as a slave for his pursuit of wealth. The ending really touched me, as both Red and Andy rejoice in going through so many years in prison and finally being able to prove themselves as people who kept their morals and get what they deserve.
